One of the greatest challenges of being an arson investigator is testifying. When in front of a jury, you want to make sure that you are explaining the facts and the underlying science to show why your origin and cause determination is accurate. You also want to be able to withstand the scrutiny of cross-examination by opposing counsel.
Some investigators look at testimony as pure torture. Others look at it as an exciting opportunity . Everybody knows it isn't easy. No matter what your background, Expert Witness Boot Camp will help train you in at least these ways:
Know how to prepare
Know what information you don't have to give up
Practice testifying
Discuss your fears and concerns with your peers
Learn about how Daubert challenges can affect you and your testimony
Use your notes to help you and not the other side
Experienced litigation attorney, Rod Dunlap, and experienced expert witness, Dr. Elizabeth Buc, will give you training from both the viewpoint of the attorney and the witness.
Rod Dunlap is a Farmington Hills attorney who has been litigating arson cases for 30 years. He has been a featured speaker for multiple organizations including the International Association of Arson and Fire Investigators (IAAFI), the National Business Institute, and the International Association of Special Investigation Units (IASIU). As lead trial counsel, he has prepared many witnesses, and been involved in countless depositions and trials.
Dr. Elizabeth Buc is a certified fire investigator, engineer, and scientist who has testified many times as an expert witness to back up her scientific and investigative opinions. She has been a featured speaker for organizations such as IAAFI, IASIU, and the International Symposium on Fire Investigation Science and Technology (ISFI).
Fire Materials Research Laboratory is a scientific research center run by Dr. Buc, and located in Livonia, Michigan. It's also a great place for a seminar and for burning stuff indoors and out.
